Re: Holley Carb Numbers
re holley carb numbers tom buddie according to the holley illustrated parts specs manual page lists the r a and the r a the a is listed for pass and z with a manual transmission the a is listed for pass z and lt corvette with manual transmission although almost identical the two carbs did have a few parts that were different according to this holley publication the exploded parts view identifies the carbs as model meaning your carb should have metering bodies one on each side of the main body as opposed to the model which has metering body and a metering plate on the opposite side both used the same base gasket and renew kit according to the holley carburetor numerical listing both carbs had a vehicle manufacturing part number of and a tag number of ga a service replacement carb number is listed as this along with joes info should be enough for a competent parts guy to find the correct kit for your carb i used to work in an authorized delco parts store and spent my spare time learning how to cross reference parts while the other guys were bs'ing by the soda machine you need to find a better parts source of course the kits are available directly from holley one gotcha the power valve view is listed as r a as even holley kits sometimes contain generic wrong power valves and or power valve gaskets in this case you would need to id the original correct valve gasket and order it separately also before you rebuild the carb verify that the throttle body bore shaft does not have excessive clearance not endplay if it does contact me via e mail and i'll tell you how to repair it- Top

Re: Holley Carb Numbers
re holley carb numbers carl rose hi mr buddie a quick question tha tis entirely unrelated to the above discussion of lt carburetors my has a cfm list it has been on the car for about years what is a reliable way to check for throttle shaft bushing wear i can't spray carb cleaner on the shafts as the engine is all nicely painted i have noticed that some days it wants to idle at other days not at all and behaves as if it has a vacuum leak the car has no engine acessories as pb k i know that larger engines tolerate wear better than smnaller engines i've been working on holleys for far too long but have yet to unstake and remove a throttle shaft carl- Top

Throttle Shaft
throttle shaft tom buddie you can avoid messing up the paint by carefully surrounding the end of the shaft with a thick handful of paper towels or a good absorbent rag then you can use a spray can with the skinny red nozzle extension attached you just have to be careful you can lay a bunch of paper towels on top of the intake also to catch any stray fluid i'm not too confident in the spray it technique this problem is typically intermittent and the spray technique is not always reliable another alternative is to spread some real heavy grease around he shaft where it exits the throttle body at the lever end you have to be sure to get a seal most of the wear will occur where the return spring and the throttle lever work against each other using the throttle shaft as a pivot then try to determine if it made any difference as a last resort after i was quite sure it was a problem i disassembled the throttle shaft and slid an o ring onto the shaft all the way up to the throttle lever end then i put the carb back together and on the engine it ran so good i left it that way for several months i've put bushings in so many of these that i can now tell just by feel which ones are too lose some of these carbs the and the included are supposed to have internal teflon ribbon seals on the throttle shaft r and r i have found these to be missing in many cases i suppose as the result of someone messing with the carb they can be difficult to re install once the throttle body has been disassembled these seals if in place will allow a very sloppy shaft to function acceptably but intermittently if they're missing they need to be replaced one more point the throttle shafts did not come from the factory with any bushings if you find a throttle body with bushings installed it has already been re bushed a mis nomer if you do plan on taking your throttle body apart mark identify the plates for exact re assembly don't try to unscrew the screws until after you carefully grind off the threaded tips work them slowly and carefully or you'll ruin the threaded throttle shaft when you re assemble whether you use new screws or not use a high quality thread lock- Top

Re: Throttle Shaft
re throttle shaft carl rose thanks mr buddie i think i like the idea of greasing the throttle shafts a bit more than using the carb cleaner i guess as a last resort i could disassemble the throttle shaft but some years back i bought an new just before the prices went up even more that is still sealed in its box waiting for the day i get tired of working on the one on the car carl- Top
