My dear wife gave me a new Quanta gas tank for the '56 for Christmas. Good girl!!! Do I need to clean it out at all before installing? Are there any elements from manufacturing that need to be evacuated? Secondly, the service manual says that the gas tank cover is glued and screwed down. Is there any specific cement that should be used? I will be restoring the screw holes in both the cover and the body. Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: New Gas Tank For C1
Steve,
The tank should be clean the way is comes. The cover is not glued down, but is set in the Dum-Dum that is used almost everwhere on the car. 3M strip caulk is a good substitute. just put down a strip of it all around the opening and trim off what extrudes out when you tighten the screws. The screws go into welded nuts on the front edge of the opening, and slip on nutplates on the rest of the opening.

Dennis is right! In addition, you probably want to put a new hose on the drain nipple under the filler neck. Most of these hoses are long gone, and an overfill, or a leak at the cap, will run fuel down inside the tank compartment. The hose runs from the nipple to a hole in the underside of the body.
