I plan on diriving my 58 w/ 2X4 carbs to colorado this summer. Coming from basically sea level to 11,000 feet has to have some impact on how well the car runs at elevation. What adjustments need to be made and how often does it need to be made? If you drive on I-70, there is not always a pull off area to adjust the carbs, so can the some of the adjustment be made in advance, say at 4,000 feet to accomodate up to 7-8,000 feet?

Other than curb idle richness, there's not much you can adjust quickly on WCFB carbs.... Once you're off the idle circuit of the carb, mixture is dictated by internal rods/jets.
Originally, these carbs came from the factory with one setup for all 50-States. Those of us who live in Colorado and operate our cars here year round, typically re-jet them (leaner) to compensate for the altitude and lack of O2 density. But, for a short trip/short stay you shouldn't encounter problems other than you'll tend to run on the rich side....- Top

if you really need to lean out the WCFB carbs for running at high altitude you can remove the cover over the metering rods,mark the shaft so you can put the metering rod lifting arm back to the orignal position then remove the metering rod lifting arm and put in a piece of foam rubber to hold the rods down so they stay on the lean stop when the vacuum drops. removing the power piston spring on AFB carbs will do the same thing for running at high altitude. change it all back when you get out of the mountains or you will have a lean hesitation.- Top

The most noticeable change will be loss of idle speed as altitude increases, so all you need to to is set it up when you stop for food or fuel as you gain altitude and set it back down as you descend.
If you are at 4000 ft. and going to 8000, set it a two or three hundred RPM higher than normal idle speed.
