"How to" paint 427 intake manifold correctly?

    Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!!

The org owner of my L-36 had painted my 1966 intake manifold orange. I would like to remove the paint and re-paint or refinish the intake properly. Just spent an hour searching the archives and was unsucessful. It's in perfect cond, intake is NOT damaged or marked. Car has 39,939 org miles on it.

-Do I need to remove the intake or leave it in place? (just learning here guys/gals)

    - If so what is the process for removal and re-install??

-What paint or color product is used to refurbish the intake to factory?

Thank-you, much appreciate all your help!!

    All the best in 2005.

    Keith:

I'm a bit puzzled. I believe the L36 in 1966 used a cast iron intake manifold and that the factory painted it along with the block and heads and rocker covers factory Chevrolet orange.

Is it just not the right shade or something?

Your original intake is a cast iron piece that was originally painted chevy orange as part of the engine assembly. If originality is important to you, I would leave it as is. You might want to purchase a Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide from this site that will answer a number of questions like this about your vette. It is a great investment for $30.00.

Thank-you Warren & John: I did not know that the intake was painted chevy orange. I've seen so many 427 photo's with the intake alumi in color that I thought this was correct. I'm ordering the tech guide now!!

Q/ Was the L-72 in 66, L-78, and all 427's in 67 intakes painted orange from the factory?? or do some people change them depending on their preference?

        Thanks again,

        Merry Christmas.

            Keith:

            L36 engines of 1966 & 1967 were cast iron and painted. L71, L72, L78, L88, L89 of 1965, 1966, & 1967 years used aluminum intake manifolds and were left with a natural appearance.

As you can see, Keith, the 66 and 67 L36 manifold is somewhat an anomaly among corvette intakes.

if a magnet sticks to the manifold

it should be orange and if the magnet does not stick it would be aluminum in color
