    1957 Seat Cushion Installation

What is the configuration (shape) of the two tabs that hold the bottom of the Back Seat Cushion onto the Seat Frame? Also, what is the proper sequence to install the Bottom and Back Seat Cushions to the Seat Frame?

    Thanks!

While on the topic of 57 seats ,the springs in mine are getting weak . Are any good ones offered on the market today ? I would like to take mine on a 5 or 6 thousand mile drive and need some support for the seat bottoms .

believe al knoch has spring assemblies for your 57. the seat bottom goes into frame after the back is installed. the back is retained at its lower most end by two tabs that are part of the frame. mike

Each seats frames has two lower flat square tags of softer metal that are bent down to hold the back cushion. They are missing on many frames over the years , but are not necessary if missing, the lower seat when locked down will hold them back The 53 to 55 used two bolts holding the back cushion down passenger side ( no seat track)

In other words, the top of the Back Cushion is hooked over the top of the Seat Frame, then the two Bottom Tabs on the Seat Frame are bent over the two bottom Hooks of the Back Cushion. If this is the case, those two bottom Seat Frame Tabs are only good for a few bends before they break. That's not a very good design! Any thoughts on a solution to keep from breaking the tabs would be appreciated.

          Thanks for your generous help!

            Bob,

I have had my '57 seats out twice without breaking the tabs. Once, to clean and lube the tracks and refinish the frames, and second time to install the mounting hardware for the softtop frame and seat belts. The tabs have a small hole in them which lends itself well to the use of a drift punch to bend the tabs into place. You can center the punch and actually push the tabs closed by hand. This can be done carefully and slowly, thereby eliminating some of the fatigue of a quick bend .

What is the trick to installing the Ball Bearing Cages into the Seat Track Adjusters?

Patience, as well as modifying the part so it actually works.

My friend was trying to get his seat tracks together for his 60 Corvette earlier this year. I spent the better part of an evening fixing his new reproduction parts so that they actually better matched his originals and would function.

Another case of a repro not getting that close at matching an original part.

                  Patrick:

This assembly is original equipment in good condition, nothing appears damaged. I have the assembly apart that does not have the adjuster. Does it matter which end goes together first? Also, it appears the assembly with the adjuster does not come apart without major work and destruction.

                  Thanks for your information!

                    Bob,

The one I worked on was rescued from the rusty grave, so I didn't have to disassemble it. It came apart easily, and we just had to get the new parts to fit.

It did make a difference which end we did first, but offhand I can't remember which end.

We did do both tracks, incl the one with the adjuster, but again the destruction phase was done.
