    High lift cam

What is it that gives the 1980 L82 the extra 40 hp? Is it the 9:1 pistons alone or is there a mild cam inside that helps out. I cant seem to find anything in the manual to show any other differences other than just the compression ratio. thanks in advance, Dan

The main difference in horsepower is provided by the cam. Other differences in the engine support the extra power and RPM.

The 3896962 cam was used in the L-46 for '69 and '70, and it reappeared as the "L-82 cam" from '73 to '80.

Compared to the L-79 cam it has 3 degrees more .050" lifter rise duration and is phased four degrees later. With its longer stroke, the 350 needed a little "more cam" to have the desired SHP characteristics.
