1977 & newer dealer invoices avail

    Hi everybody!

First, let me tell you that for the last 2 weeks or so I have (with great difficulty) refrained from posting this. I wanted to make sure that what I'm about to tell you is 100% accurate. In a moment, you will understand and appreciate my hesitance to post this information. Hopefully, many of you have read my posts & know that I am credible.

For many years we have been taunted with rumors concerning the possibility that original Corvette documentation might exist in some undisclosed and long forgotten warehouse. We have even heard rumors that PHS might have access to these records. Until this very day at exactly 3:28pm the acquisition of any orginal document for our St. Louis Corvette seemed so remote, I dared not hope I'd ever see anything in my lifetime.

I am very pleased to tell you that I can now say with 100% certainty that the original dealer invoice for your Corvette is available! In fact, the mailman delivered mine a few minutes ago and I am looking at it right now. Also, I would be remiss if I failed to give a huge thanks to a very knowledgable Corvette expert, rare parts source and one of the nicest people you could ever meet for turning me on to this informaton. Thank you LT1GEORGE!!!

I do want to ask one thing of you before I give you the information. Please, Please, Please promise me you will fill out the customer service form that comes with your dealer invoice and return it promptly. There is plenty of room to write some additional information on the front and back of the form as well. It is extremely important that we let GM know how much we value this service and would like to see it continue and be built upon (this is a $ looser for them). Also, please say some kind words about Peggy Vezina. She is the person who will be doing this research for you. It's a one woman operation and she is working very hard on our behalf.

Now for what you have been waiting for....................................

For an original copy of your Corvette dealer invoice or ANY other GM car or truck 1977 to present, send an email to one of the following email addresses. I sent mine directly to Peggy. You MUST have the correct VIN (please triple check it before requesting the information) and provide the year, make and model of your vehicle as well as your full address. Oh, one last thing........................it's free!

    GMMA.research@gm.com OR peggy.vezina@gm.com

For those who have a Corvette older than 1977 you may want to call GM to see if your dealer invoice is available. Here's the # 1-800-851-8984.

I've dropped a note to Peggy and I'll let the group know when its arrived.

Recognize now though that a dealer invoice is limited in the information about "build" data it yields. It lists RPOs and price (if its what I believe it to be) rather than broadcast codes that reconcile to tags on a vehicle. But its clearly a step in the right direction.

The ordered RPO codes that show up on the invoice are what the plant computer used as input to create the build sheet. For example, if the order included FE7 the build sheet will have the codes for the appropriate FE7 springs, bars, etc.

Since there are plenty of '77-up build sheets floating around, it should not be hard to determine the production codes for all base and RPO components.

The dealer invoice I was sent for my 1981 includes RPO's, full dealer code, dealer address, where the dealer financed the vehicle, original key codes, pricing, how transported, build date, ship date, deliver date, order # etc.

        I hope this helps

I have a GM book with all RPO's with description and there are many, many.

          Just ask.

This sounds more like a "shipper copy" than a build sheet. It would list the options by name instead of RPO number. At least that's the way it was years ago.

Would it be possible for you to scan and post the copy that you received? Thanks,

            Michael

              Hi Michael!

The document is neither a build sheet or shipper copy, it is the original dealer invoice. I'l try to take a pic this weekend but I have no idea how to post it. I can however email it if you would like. I will have to block out somehow the keycodes.

Yes...please send me a copy. Is it computer generated or the manual hard copy with dealer check marks in the boxes?

Re: 1977 & newer dealer invoices avail

Some RPOs will be easier to build than others. Base and FE7 suspension, for example had in 78-79 over 18 different front coil springs depending on tire selection and options. The hobby has yet been able to produce a comprehensive list of carb codes for late model C3s...TMs article covered those through 74.

I'm looking at two 78 build sheets with nearly identical equipment including FE7. One's a Pace Car and the other a Silver Anniversary...only difference seats, air deflector and spoiler yet the Pace Car has higher rated springs than the Anniversary. Can't spot this from an invoice copy.

Thanks. If you would like, I can post a scan or picture of it here on the DB if you send it to me in email. There are probably a lot of people that would be interested. If so, I'll send you an email address to send it to.

There's a lot of nervous 1977 Vette owners with restamped L82 blocks right about now.

                        January Hemmings $12.00

Yes, I was thinking about that also. There will probably be a lot of cars for sale real soon. The "Corvettes For Sale" section of Hemmings will be a record 1/4" thick next month. I suspect there will also be a lot of pre 77 cars for sale too with owners of "kit Car" big blocks and "FI's" thinking the 63-67 paperwork is coming soon. And just think about all the knock off wheels that would be for sale! It would be the best thing that's happened to the Corvette hobby in decades.

Since these nervous owners would have

also had to install a phony VIN tag (to complete the transformation) they have a lot more to be nervous about than a restamped block.

These sheets have little commercial impact on the value of a vehicle, IMHO mainly of nostalgic interest to the owner.

Seriously, I bet they never find the C1 and C2 paper.
