    Chrome plate removal

Hello all. What is the best method to chemically remove chrome plating from a steel part? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Re: Chrome plate removal

Two methods are used by plating houses. The most common is to etch the part in a pickling bath then polish to remove pit induced in the process. The uncommon method to de-plate the part in the chrome plating tank by swapping plating voltage. The second approach is the cleanest/fastest method, but few platers will offer you this path because it has the side effect of contaminating their final chrome tank....

The savvy plater WILL provide this service, but he'll hold the part and WAIT until it's the 'natural' time to empty and replenish his chrome tank so the effect of contamination is nill.
