    Re: Side Exhaust

re side exhaust carl rose dear googster to replace your undercar exhaust with a side mounted exhaust you shall need the following as you surmised replace rear valence and entire previous exhaust system up to manifolds remove rocker panel moldings and trim off the brackets to hold it you will need to trim the front fender lower fiberglass the assembly manual at least for has dimensions to cut remove outer splash shields partswise a side exhaust outer covers with internal fiberglass insulators b side exhaust mufflers usually on car if i remember correctly remember to replace the muffler to manifold donuts c front brackets to mount to front innner fenders d rear brackets to stabilize rear of side exhaust cover e rear muffler bracket mounting hardware f remove undercar exhaust pipe mounting bracket at transmission and replace with side exhaust spacer g remove ground straps to above bracket h upper trim for side exhaust cover and mounting hardware you will need to drill a new set of holes in the body below the door there are also two metal strips used to hold the upper trim in place i finally trim the lower curvature at the front of the rear fender i would reccomend you think long and hard before doing this especially if you have an original unmodified car some of these modifications are irreversible most retrofitted side exhaust systems are detectable and if your car is an early production were not originally factory available you will have to match your paint on the lower rear valence side exhaust mufflers look great but are loud and annoying after driving for about an hour you can usually find complete used systems for about compelte new parts will probably run about look in the driveline vette vues or some of the internet bulletin boards hope this helps carl

      Re: Side Exhaust

re side exhaust ed jennings about years ago i retrofited side exhausts to a roadster as you mention you will obviously need to replace the lower exhaust panel other than that the installation is pretty simple not trying to contridict anyone but i did not have to cut anything unless my memory has become real bad the only extra holes in the car were the mounting bolts in the front wheel wells for the mounting strap for the covers i think the original ones were mounted differently so it won't be original on close inspection these pipes are loud i have an aftermarket set on my sb that are perhaps a bit quieter than the originals but they are still loud not too bad around town but if you take extended trips they can become annoying one of the catalogs that i get suggested that the supply of the nos covers is drying up so if you want a set you may want to act soon

          Re: Side Exhaust

re side exhaust gary schisler just an added note here corvette fever ran an article not too long ago on a new exhaust system for mid years that was a chambered exhaust like the side exhaust that fit under the car utilizing the original exhaust brackets you had the best of both worlds side exhaust sound that was slightly muted because it wasn't right beside you ear and you also kept your car original in appearance granted it doesn't have the side exhaust look which i think is outrageously cool and and has that muscle car look all over it i do have two friends with side exhaust and other than the look the both wish their car had under car exhaust

re side exhaust vs under car exhaust brandon korman for all you guys with the under car exhaust systems how much of a problem is the heat radiating thru the floorboards is it worth the trade off of being cooler w the side exhaust for the noise that it makes has anyone tried the new ceramic type of floor heat barriers results thanks in advance

re side exhaust jack humphrey all advice given you is basically true difficulty cost noise loss of authenticity applicability reversibility and new through frame alternatives but even with the advice given you conversion has a very high probability of being detected on the judging field but car is yours and so is decision it's your asset need to bear in mind one thing not mentioned n option looks great but on a driver it wears poorly gravel chips dings and grey paint used between aluminum all combine to look spotty within a reasonably short time may be one of the reasons you can find so many used side exhaust components at swap meets corvette shops etc

re side exhaust ed jennings having taken a close look at my with side exhaust my memory must be failing looks like it is necessary to notch the area underneath the front of the rocker moulding save the piece if you want to go back it can be glassed back in and will be underneath the rocker moulding a couple of decades ago i was temporarily successful at quieting the side exhausts by stuffing very coarse s s wool in the ends it sort of took the bite out of the exhaust note and still gave it a real nice tone problem was it blew out pretty regularly the open chambered under car setup sounds pretty good that way the noise is behind you instead of directly in your left ear

                    Re: Side Exhaust

re side exhaust john i have had two 's with factory side exhausts plus a couple of cobras and a tube frame grand sport with side exhausts they look slick sound neat for a few minutes other people think they're way cool but if you spend more than minutes at expressway speeds you'll wonder why you ever spent the time and money for the conversion after you figure out how to get rid of excedrin headache number it's your car and do what you like but having had at least four cars with side exhausts i've learned my lesson i'd never have another car with side exhausts and i've been through worse built fuel burning blown hemis for a living at one time and ran my own top fueler for two seasons acoustic earmuffs are fine in a race car but they look funny on the street

re side exhaust ed jennings john has a real point it really depends on how you use the car for street cruising they are really fine if you do much driving on the open road they are sort of a pain the around town sound is pretty cool the highway sound is sort of a pain only you can decide what you want the side pipes are definately a cop caller

re side exhaust ray morrison you want to keep in mind that sidepipes were not an available option during the innitial production months for model year ' ' if your vin is lower than you will have a problem on the judging field
