With the door open and the engine running my interior and dash lights "pulsate" at idle. This may also happen at driving speeds but I haven't noticed. All suggestions for a cure are appreciated. Thanks, Bill #20328

Re: What Makes This Happen ?
Hi Bill,
A couple of possibilities:
1. One or more of the diodes in the alternator is shorted or blown. This would have one or two of the phases not producing current and so you would have a pulse. If you start the car, get the engine idled as low as you can go, 400 to 500 rpm, and disconnect the battery, and you may be able to see the pulsing right at the alternator red terminal with a regular voltmeter. An oscilloscope will show it without doubt.
2. The connection between the battery and the car is less than great. It is good to the starter, so it starts, but to the main wiring one of the wires may have corroded or has a couple of the strands break. I would try checking the voltage at the starter solenoid and then back at the firewall connector or voltage regulator to see if it is pulsing.
3. The voltage regulator may be adjusted wrong.
4. You may have a bad winding in the alternator.
5. Idle may be so low all this shows up.- Top
