I lost my notes, what side of the car do steering knuckles 3817593 and 3817594 go?

        Mike,

One day, I was looking at a right rear wheel cylinder for a 63 and noticed it was a part number that ended in an odd number. Knowing that right hand side parts ended in even numbers, I went back to the parts book to double check and, indeed, the odd number was right and even was left for the two rear cylinders. I assumed it was a misprint and checked an older parts book but it showed the same numbers per side. Finally occured to me that these same two cylinders were also used on passenger car but were installed in the reverse order so the original number assignment was correct. They just swapped them side for side for Corvette.

The steering KNUCKLES on 63-82 Corvettes are not side-specific; the same knuckle is used on either side of the car. However, the steering ARMS are side-specific. The numbers that you mentioned are the forging numbers found on the 63-67 steering arms. The "593" is the left arm and the "594" is the right arm consistent with the usual GM left/right part numbering system Mike mentioned.

In this particular case, it's not really important, though. There's really no way to install the arms on the wrong side of the car and end up with something that wouldn't be instantly apparent as being wrong.
