What is the correct headmark for judging on a 1965 396 oil pan drain bolt. Also,do 1965/66/67 big blocks all use the same headmark? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 1965 Oil Drain Bolt
The drain plug bolt on 16120 is a 7/8 head size with an A inside a circle. It has a whiteish clear plastic gasket and a magnet on the end of the bolt. This engine was removed at about a year old ,I believe it is the original. I dont know about 66 or 67s..Bill- Top

An "A" in a circle is ONE of the known headmarks. I'll bet there were others, too. This was a WIDELY used piece and, undoubtedly, there were multiple suppliers to GM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Yes!
Circle-A, L, and TR are all known suppliers for this part. However, different National Team Leaders describe the pan plug's head mark differently in terms of recognized acceptance based on their individual observations/experience. So, while we know for certain that GM/Chevy had multiple qualified vendors, you should consult your year Judging Guide before you source the part....
Just because there were multiple suppliers for a given part, doesn't necessarily mean that a given final assy plant actually bought from all of the sources and used them in bins on the line during a given time period. Sometimes considerations like time of purchase, availability and freight-in costs affected the specific selection of a particular part with multiple qualified supply sources....- Top
