67 parking brake slider cover gap

I have always wondered this: When I pull up the parking brake handle on my 67, the slider pulls up beyond the center console and you can see down into the mechanism and see the ratcheting teeth, etc. The slider doesn't appear to be broken. Is it only supposed to cover up things when the brake is released and not when engaged?

        Tim,

When I purchased my car the slider was broke so I replaced it. I remember having to feed it past the console even after cutting some off to get it to work. It does cover the opening when the brake is applied. It worked fine like that for over a year but then it bound one time when using the brake and now it binds periodically. I don't know how they came from the factory but it would be nice to hear from someone that has seen an original.

I have heard that the replacement sliders that are available are actually designed to fit 68 and later cars, and that they are longer than the actual size for 67 but will work if trimmed to fit.

I believe my '67 to be original, and it doesn't cover the opening entirely either. Guess they were just concerned how it would look with the brake off.

              Rob,

An easy way to tell an original 67 from a 68 and later is look at the slit for the brake handle in the plastic. I'm pretty sure the correct original 67 has the slit on the left while the 68 to ? has it on the right.

I have one of each here somewhere but can't find the 67 to check and measure.

Original 67 parking brake sliders have the split on the left side. (drivers side) Many reproductions have the split on the right side. The original 67 sliders will not cover the entire opening when the parking brake handle is in the applied position.(pulled up)

Original cars were actually just the opposite. *NM*

Original levers only pulled up about 1/3 of ....

that distance. You may be able to adjust the cable to eliminate or reduce that reveal situation.

So if the slit is on incorrect side, is it a deduct in judging?

Typically a one point deduction. *NM*
