Tar based frame paint on a 60 Vette

As far as the frame and some suspension parts, I am a little confused, some soures just say semi- gloss black and some mention Tar based framepaint ...what is correct?

    Dave,
The original paint was a poor quality, asphalt-based paint that would wash right off the frame and suspension with almost any solvent (including gasoline!)
That being said, a nice semi gloss black urethane paint is way more durable, and will usually not take a single point deduct. I know people who put the asphalt-based paint over the urethane, but that is way too anal retentive for even me! I have never taken a point for frame finish, and have never used the asphalt paint. I usually use PPG DCC 9700 flatened to a semi-gloss sheen, and have been very pleased with the results.

    Regards, John McGraw
