I am reposting this question in hopes that you can share you experience/knowledge re this detail. The 1966 427/425 water pump is mounted against the block on the passenger side with one hex head bolt and one bolt that has a stud protruding from it. What is the stud for and is it mounted on the outside mounting hole - i.e. the one closest to the pass side inner fender. Also - the Judging manual calls for a flat rear plate on the back of the water pump - however I have seen many that have a flange edge (edge is curved outward). Are both plates correct depending upon production dates?

Re: 66 L72 427/425 Water Pump (Repost)
Peter,
I'm not 100% sure on this but since these engines were also used on the passenger car line, I always assumed the stud was there for the battery neg cable on a full size Chevrolet. (yes, there were 425 HP full size Chevy's in 66) Most of these engines were not Corvette unique when they left Tonawanda (other than the oil pan) so adding the stud to all engines would have eliminated one more variable on the engine line.

Re: 66 L72 427/425 Water Pump Back Plate
Peter,
The flat back cover was used for at least most of the 66 model year but I really don't know for sure if it continued right to the end of production or was replaced some time before the end with the curved back cover.- Top
