    Re: Side Exhaust Retainer 3880494

    Had several requests for info and scan of the 65-67 side exhaust moulding retaining clips. If I remember correctly, they are 10-24 machine thread as opposed to the self tapping thread of the non side exhaust clip. Unique to this application, they are quite difficult to find. Here's another shot with the original GM output card.

      Mike, The clip shown with the "M" trademark, was/is commonly used on construction equipment. I believe are used on John Deere, Case, and probably others to hold the dash gauge panel, if I remember correctly. We used to get them thru our bolt distributor, they came from Au-ve-co Products Company, in Covington, KY 41017. Dave

        Dave,

        Quite possible that you are correct but I remember years ago going through an Au-Ve-Co catalog and I never found one that exactly matched the original. The dimensions could be correct but the shape was always quite a bit different. The most obvious difference was the shape of the metal on the nut side. The Au-Ve-Co had a flat back plate that the nut was spot welded to but the original GM or "M" had a curved shape. While the Au-Ve-Co was functionally interchangeable with the original, it was not physically the same in appearence. I suppose it's possible there are other sources that may have this exact part but I never found one.

        The good news is, most of these are hidden and not visible once the mldg's are in place but the one that the front brackets is attached too is visible. I believe the battery may hide the other side.

          Mike, I will take a look and see if I still have one of them to compare. Dave

            Thanks Dave. I don't have any cars with side exhaust but I'm sure there are a lot of people that will be interested in knowing if this part is available.

              Michael;

              I just checked and found my originals, well 7 of them. I can't remember if I got NOS ones with the parts to the car, if not then where can I get them??. The ones on the car were identical to those in your picture. Mine did not have macine screws in them but it is a very early SE car; 65--#9038. the nut part does apear to be as you mentioned "10/24" . Thanks; David

                Mike,

                --------I think you ruined those clips when you stamped that "M" in them. They must be rare if your scared they are going to be stolen. Oh well, a little filler will cover up the "M"!!!!!!!!!.........Bill S

                  David,

                  I'm not sure if these clips are available from some aftermarket source or not but a few people are supposedly checking on it. We'll have to wait for their reply. I don't know of any NOS or used that are for sale.

                  I don't have a 65 AIM here but I seem to remember a change in part number on this clip in the middle of the 65 run. It may have been a change from the production clip used without side exh or possibly a 1st design clip for SE. If the change in the AIM occured after your car was built, that would not necessarily mean the 494 was not used until the date of the change. Often, changes were made on the line BEFORE the change showed up in the AIM. (but usually it was the other way around) If your original clips had machine thread, it would sugggest that the 494 was already in use, before the AIM dated change. It will be interesting to find out exactly what your originals look like.

                    Re: The "Mikey Clip"

                    Bill,

                    Yep, grampa always told me to put my initials in everything to prevent theft.

                    Actually, I'm still not sure if that's an "M" or a "W". It appears to be symmetrical. However, I've decided it will now be known as an "M", for the "Mikey Clip". (sounds a lot better than the "mikey Nut")

                    I ordered a great big bag of these in the early 80's and gave most of them away to people building phony side exhaust cars.
