    Re: MATCHING NUMBERS

Depending on what state you reside in, the numbers are usually posted in the sports pages of your local newspaper. Hope this helps.

      Re: MATCHING NUMBERS

      Michael,

The term "matching numbers" is a term frequently abused by at least 90% of people in this hobby and expecially those who have a car for sale.

It means very little as most people have a completely different idea as to what it really is all about. There are probably over a 100 part numbers typically judged when evaluating the originality of a Corvette. Usually the engine and drivetrain part numbers and associated casting dates along with how they line up with the car's build date are the primary focus.

I'd suggest spending $30 on a 63/64 judging guide availible here on-line at the NCRS bookstore. It goes into great detail on all the "numbers" questions important to you.

      Good Luck in your quest.

        Re: MATCHING NUMBERS

        Michael:

The phrase "numbers matching" is very much misused from a correct context point. I believe their are only 3 items on a Corvette that could be stated as 'numbers matching'. The cylinder case (engine block), the transmission, and the vehicle frame. A derivative of the vehicle identification number (VIN) is part of the stamping on each of these components when the final assembly of the corvette left the St Louis assembly plant. Matching the partial vin derivative on each of these 3 components to the vin plate of the completed car would mean that these components were more than likely the original pieces that the car was assembled with, when it left the plant.

The other components that use a stamped or casted number usually will have a date that precedes the build date of the vin tag on the car, by either a few days or weeks or months, and as long as the part number is associated with the proper usage of that part for a Corvette; people will often use the term matching numbers, when in fact their is no other number on the car to match it with.

Another "matching number" verification for some Corvettes is the protect-o-plate which provides the original engine, transmission, and rear end documentation.

              Warren,

Anyone with access to a set of alpha-numeric steel stamps can duplicate a VIN derivative on the components you mention. We wouldn't want to imply that the presents of same...

"means that these components were more than likely the original pieces that the car was assembled with"

Many new buyers get burned this way..
