I've got a 3.70:1 in mine. The 1963 327/340 was equipped with the "Duntov" cam, which makes marginally more torque than the 365SHP.

diring the gas crunch in the early 70s I drove my 66 300hp with 308 rear from Westchester Couny NY to Albany NY (100+ miles) at 50 mph and got 27 mpg.

I changed my 66 from 308 to 370. The transmission was a m20. 1st thru 3rd was like a m21 with 411 gears. in 4th, 2800 rmp at 60 mph. You'll like the 370

The 4:11 is a great around town gear - good all around performance and acceleration. You won't be disappointed .. ! .. Highway driving with the 4:11's the engine rev's will be up and you won't have to downshift when passing another car. Hammer down and GONE. I did that to a Porsche once and the guy didn't like it ----------- passed by a CORVETTE .. ? .. Further on down the road he passed me back, in the fog no less, doing about 100 mph .. ! ..

I'd like to get good at changing out the rear carrier assembly too. I bought a 3:08 complete rear carrier assembly mainly as a highway cruise gear. I'd like to do some long distance touring and the 3:08 seems well suited to the task.

The Porsche guy. Probably not, cuase he was holding on for dear life!

One thing about a 3.08 with a four speed, you can do 135 mph and only be turning 5300rpm. But I don't do that anymore, even with new suspension.

Well, if the guy did the digital thing I couldn't tell.

Just about everytime the 3:08 comes up in conversation I get hit with the "how come you got that one?"........"You shoulda got the............" - meaning anything other than the 3:08. I figure I'll gain roughly 20 mph for any given rpm compared to the 4:11's I have in the car now. Don't sound like too bad a trade off cruise gear to me .. ! . .

That Porsche was probably turning the same or less rpm when he passed you at 100.
I love my 3.08! The high speed passing acceleration at highway speeds is just great as well as the fuel economy, if you don't push it. And getting off the line is not bad if you just use the low gears. I hardy ever get into 4th around town. But if you like to get off the line, you'll burn a lot of clutches.

I was once in an uphill parade, and the clutch smoked so bad I had to drop out just past the grandstand. Very embarassing!
