    '66 Gas Tank stencil

    Hello,

The original tank in my '66 shows no sign of markings on it yet Quanta says it should have them. What is correct? Many of the cars other markings are intact so I don't know why the tank markings would be gone if it ever had them.

    Thanks,

    Ian

    Re: '66 Gas Tank stencil

    Ian-----

Not all of the tanks had the part number stencilled on them. Basically, only a few per pallet did have the stencilled part number. So, the cars that have tanks with stencils are, by far, the exception and not the rule. The stencilled part number identified the tanks on the pallet, most likley for the purposes of the plant where they were produced and shipping. There didn't need to be any sort of part number on the individual tanks as far as St. Louis assembly was concerned. That's because during any given year in the 63-67 period there was only one tank part number in the plant. Under such circumstances, it's pretty hard for the assemblers to install the wrong tank in a car.

        Correction

A slight correction: actually there were TWO fuel tanks in the St. Louis plant during the mid-year period. The standard steel tank which was used on the vast majority of cars and the fiberglass 36 gallon tank used for some 1963 Z-06 and 64-67 with N-03. There weren't very many of the latter tanks in the plant, though, and there was no way that anyone could get one confused with the standard tank.

            Bill -

It was installed at St. Louis, just before submerging the tank assembly in the leak test tank to look for bubbles.
