67 427 Vin Pad Stamping

Can anyone tell me if the #'s that are stamped on the pad, done at the Tonawanda plant, before complete assembly. I'm asking this because it appears that the assembly date #'s would have to be stamped prior to the head being installed (Mine are against the edge) due to there close location to the edge of the cylinder head,and possibly the vin #'s stamped at the factory?.

I believe that the engine production codes (i.e. begin with "T" for Tonawanda engines) were stamped on the short block assembly prior to installation of the heads. I'm not 100% sure of this, though, and it's a fairly moot point.

The VIN derivative was stamped on the engine at the vehicle assembly plant and not the engine assembly plant. So, it was definitely stamped on the pad after the heads were installed.

Joe - this is correct, the plug in the BB heads protruded to far at times to allow the gang stamp to correctly stamp the Tonawanda engine asm date....so they did it at the short block stage....Craig
