    Interesting Parts Acquisitions

Well, in the last several weeks I've acquired several interesting NOS items for the collection. By interesting, I mean sort of "oddball" pieces that are not commonly seen for sale in NOS condition. They represent an interesting part of Corvette history and, on that basis, I'll describe them.

GM #3908155----this piece is the brake pedal assembly applicable to 1967 Corvettes. I found it on eBay described as a "clutch pedal". But, it's not. It's the brake pedal. This is a one-year-only piece. I've NEVER seen an NOS example for sale, it's not reproduced, and it was discontinued in March, 1983. Strangely, it drew very little interest, and I bought it for a modest price. Maybe the "uninitiated" figured that it was a clutch pedal and that those are available in reproduction.

GM #3991428----this is a special 12-3/4" clutch friction disc. It had only ONE application and that application was 1971-72 Corvette with ZR-1. It's exactly the same as the L-88/ZL-1 disc, GM #3886059, except that it is 26 spline rather than 10 spline. It was discontinued in January, 1993 and carried a GM list price of about $200 when it was discontinued. When used with a GM #3886066 pressure plate assembly (I've many years ago acquired 2 of these), and a GM #14085720 flywheel (still available replacement part number identical to the 67-69 L-88 and ZR-1 flywheels), the assembly constitutes the exact same clutch assembly as used with the 71-72 ZR-1 and, except for spline configuration, exactly the same as 67-69 L-88/ZL-1. The last time I saw an NOS example of the 3991428 disc available was about 7 or 8 years ago and I bought that one, too. Once again, it drew little interest and I acquired it for a modest price.

GM #5638483-----this is the windshield wiper door actuator used for 1969 Corvettes through about mid October, 1969 production. This one has the 5/16" actuator shaft; 1968 used a 1/4" actuator shaft. Of course, it's the "coffee can" style cannister. It was discontinued from GM in January, 1973 and replaced, for SERVICE, by the 71-72 "dual pie pan" actuator, GM #5638605. Functionally, the latter part is a much better and more powerful unit. In any event, I've never seen an NOS example of the GM #5638483 for sale which is understandable as it's been discontinued for over 31 years. This unit, although not perfect with respect to plating, still has very good plating which most original, in-service units lack by now and most "re-plated" units do not duplicate. I had to pay a good price for this, but it was a very fair price considering its rarity.

As usual, it goes without saying that NONE of the above items are for sale.

    Re: Interesting Parts Acquisitions

Congratulations Joe. I found an original set of 708N GM wires for my
87 El Camino today and thought I did good.

      Joe,

I really enjoy your post on obscure GM parts. Please keep them coming, especially anything on the rare ZL-1 engine. I ordered the new version of the aluminum block and plan on building a '69 ZL-1 clone.

      Best regards,

      Dimitri D.

P.S. We are all dreaming of attending one of your garage sales.
