Mid year vin numbers on frame

Earlier today I was trying to find the vin numbers(drivers side rail)on the used frame that I recently purchased. Couldn't spot them probably because of the surface rust. Any exact areas I should be looking at? Thanks in advance. Jack J.

mine is stanped on the main rail drivers side, a few inches in front of the kickup and on top of the kickup on about the first flat area available. The numbers are large, but the stamps are not deep. If rusty, you might have to clean the area well.

On my '67 it was just forward of the rear body mount, not very deep and on an angle with some of the numbers barely visible. After you find them and clean the area of rust, spray paint over them, let dry and quickly wipe with thinner or similar. The numbers will retain the paint and be visible.

On my 65 there was two locations. One stamp on the drivers kick-up and the other on the frame rail just behind the drivers seat.

So it sounds like none of these stampings can be verified without body removal?

A magnifying mirror gives you a pretty good look between the body and frame over the real wheel. Many women have one as part of their make-up paraphenalia.

If your frame is really dirty, you can take a large diameter wire brush on a drill and run at slow speed to lightly clean the area. This will often be enough to let the numbers be seen, along with holding a light at an angle.

Not exactly judging field type stuff, but in your own garage on your car, or one you intend to drop some bucks on, it should help.
