    Help with '66 wiring decision?

    Hello,

About the only things that I have not replaced in my never ending project are the wiring harnesses. The Dash one seems to be in good shape with the ignition connector having been spliced. The engine harness has a splice at the headlights. Other wise everything looks pretty good. The dash is out as well as the motor.

What are the pros and cons of restoring the original or replacing with new. If the old wiring is cleaned up what kind of life can be expected out of almost 40 year old wires?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Ian

    Ian,
I take a pro-active approach to such things. Would it be easier to do the job now, while the car is apart or later when you have it all put back together?
The wiring isn't getting any younger and acording to Letric Limited even NOS wires have broken down. A new complete and NCRS correct wire harness set is available from Letric Limited for under $800.00. In my thinking, it's not if it will have a problem, but when. Plus, what about the possibilty of a fire? Peace of mind is invaluable!!

Ian - I agree with Rick. If you wait to do it later, it will mean at a minimum, removing the dash, pedals, Steering column, and part of the interior of the car. It's also a good time redo the firewall insulation, a miserable job at any time. I can speak for Lectric LTD's harnesses as well, as perfect as you could expect for a repro. I'd vote for doing it now.

        Ian,

I installed new wiring on my 63 and am glad I did so. I took the advice of other people that have tried to save original wiring and most will tell you it's better to replace. I have not had any problems and the job is not hard especially with the dash out, remember to get some die electric grease and coat all connections. Timothy Barbieri

          Lectric Limited vs. M&H

          Hello,

I have read some negative comments as well as a lot of positives about Lectric Limited harnesses. Has anyone had the chance to compare directly with M&H harnesses. I have seen some good comments about them on other forums but would like some more input from people that have used both if possible.

          Thanks,

          Ian
