Got the car timed and running, took it around the block for a test drive, then started to smell something burning? Drove in driveway, car just shut off, no juice, etc. Started smoking in the back of dash, removed battery cable, removed dash, hooked up battery and saw the smoke coming from the ignition switch? New wiring harness, old ignition switch! Could it be the old switch? Or a bad ground somewhere? Will not turn over with key switch, or remote switch from starter? Could the starter be a problem? I heard it "thump" each time I tried the remote switch? Tail lights were working, now not. The parking lights still work? Help!

Re: 64 coupe ignition
Most likely you smelled some burned wires from a short. Sorry to say, you are going to have to inspect the wiring until you find the burned wires, follow the burned wires to the short, repair or replace damaged wiring and start over again with reassenbly.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 64 coupe ignition
Bill, there were no visable sign of burned wires (on dash panel. I had the dash out and sitting on a box when I applied the battery cable, then noticed smoke coming from the ignition switch. It managed to melt some of the black plastic connector from the wiring harness switch. I then removed the switch, still no burned wires have been found yet? Is it a possibility that the ignition switch could have a short in it?- Top

Re: 64 coupe ignition
Nothing is impossible, but the design of the switch does not include a ground path, so I would say you have a short causing a high load thru the switch. There are some unfused circuits in the system, the first of which is the cigar lighter. Smoked wires are hard to find if you don't untape the harness. I'd start by pulling the connector off the switch and check (with battery disconnected) for one of the wires from the switch being shorted to ground.Bill Clupper #618- Top
