    rally caps

I just picked up a set of original rally wheel center caps in excellent condition and wanted to run the numbers here to see if anyone can give me any additional info. The person I bought them from said he had them hanging on his shop wall since the early 70's and the condition supports that. There are two different numbers under the cap. GM 552504 followed by 3925805. All 4 caps have the same numbers inside them. I plan on using them on my 68 coupe.

The caps from my '68 coupe have the identical numbers, except mine has "GW" in front of 552504, with an "X" under that number. I have "assumed" these to be original, as they certainly appear to be 37 years old.

The caps are original, although there's no way to tell if they were originally installed on a 1968 Corvette. That's because these caps were used for many years and there is no difference between the ones used from year-to-year.

I took a closer look and your right about the "GW" not "GM" as I thought. The "X" is located between the two sets of numbers.
        Thanks for your help.

Thanks Joe. It was a good find cause they have no pits bubbles scratches or dings and the black paint is not worn at all.
I cleaned one with a mild clay based polishing compound and the chrome is like new. I'm a little concerned about using any strong cleaners on the original black paint cause I've seen so many with the black worn off.
