C2 Backup Lights 1965

I have purchased a repro backup light switch and all associated hardware for my 65 4 speed car. I have installed it and tested, and found the switch which is working properly according to my meter, but the lights still don't work. I have checked with a meter at the harness plug on the firewall and do not have any power. Does anyone have any guidance on where to turn next. Is the hot wire to the switch harness fused? I am having trouble following the wiring diagram to see where the power comes from for this circuit.

Thank you for a very complete explanation of the circuit. I did check tonight and do have power at the plug where the switch harness connects, I guess I checked that before with the ingnition switch off. Tomorrow I will make up some long test leads and check the wiring back to the lights.

At the connector on the firewall you can hot wire from one terminal contact to the other and the back up lites should go on.
