    1980 idle solenoid

I think the idle solenoid on my car is not working. Should it have 12 volts going to it all the time? Can someone explain how it works and how I can check it?

Application of 12V to the solenoid should 'fire' it while removal of voltage relaxes the solenoid.

      Steve:

Some are energized at all times until the ignition is turned off, to prevent dieseling. This is an older "fix" and don't expect that it applies to your '80 Corvette. In more recent applications, the solenoid is energized when the A/C compressor comes on, and/or the electric cooling fans come on.
      Check it per Jack H.
