No exhaust manifold gaskets?

I observed when getting my car judged @ Waco last year points were deducted for use of exhaust manifold gaskets. Although the judging manual supports this I've always used the gaskets to ensure no exhaust leaks. How successful is mounting the manifolds not using the gaskets as it pertains to exhaust leaks? Any thoughts. Thanks.

Will a Chevrolet V-8 engine exhaust manifolds seal without the use of gaskets? Well, GM built millions of these engines over the years and with the exception of those very few which originally used tubular steel exhaust manifolds, they never used a gasket on a single one.

The trick is that the cylinder head and manifold interfacing surfaces must be CLEAN and FLAT. Always check the manifold surfaces with a precision straight edge. If necessary, have the manifold surface machined. There is usually not a problem with the cylinder head mating surface.
