    Spoof email from ebay- Beware

Those of you who use ebay, beware of email supposedly from ebay which requests verification of your ebay account and asks for personnel account information, SSN, DOB, Credit Card number, etc. The email has a link for you to sign on to ebay.

If you get one like this, just trash it, don't use the link to sign on to ebay.
As soon as you sign on, they have your ebay password and can get into any information ebay has on you.

I made the mistake of signing on using the link, figuring to give ebay a ration for asking personnel account information (and without giving them the personnel information). Two days later I get a notice from ebay that my account was compromised and suspended, just as I was about to bid on an item.

I order to get my ebay account reinstated, I had to change my email password, my ebay password, and a whole afternoon on the computer. What a hassle.

There's some real snakes out there!

    It's very possible that

the follow up email was also a scam - I have received several 'your account has been compromised' emails, each one has been a very clever ploy to get more and password and ID details. Logging onto the eBay site revealed that all was in fact OK and I deleted the scam email.

You may have inadvertantly now given access to your email account to these crooks. Best change your passwords once again.

      Re: It's very possible that

No,I reinstated the account by logging on to ebay home and went into the ebay chat room with a tech out of the security office. She told me to absolutely never log onto ebay from a suspicious e-mail link. While I was on line with her, she called me on the phone to verify my information.

Always log onto my-ebay directly, and not from a link in the e-mail. The email link may be a phony ebay website.

I'm pretty sure I've got it resolved, but if you hear about me buying a $150,000 vette, maybe not.

        Re: It's very possible that

The dangerous part of it is that once they have your account info, they can backtrack into your credit card info. That is the real danger of the "spoof" emails. I've gotten a couple of them and they can look very realistic unless you look at the actual thread that generated the email and notice it was not from eBay.

Also, never use the same password

for all your accounts and logons. As the ebay tech told me, once they have the password, if all the same, then they have it all. So I changed them all and now I have to remember all these different passwords. I even changed my password to this forum, as there is some very valuable information to be had here, probably the most precious to me.

Jerry I got a message that said they would cancel my account in three days if I did not fill out a lot of account numbers. I E-Mailed back and ask if this was a hoax. They sent back one of their nothing answers. Lyle

I received the same Email. Send it to Ebay, it may help them locate the person responsible.

I sent the Email to Ebay at: cswebhelp@ebay.com

              Their reply was:

              Hello,

Thank you for contacting eBay's Trust and Safety Department about email
solicitations that are falsely made to appear to have come from eBay.
These emails, commonly referred to as "spoof" messages, are sent in an
attempt to collect sensitive personal information from recipients who
reply to the message or click on a link to a Web page requesting this
              information.

The email you reported did not originate from, nor is it endorsed by,
eBay. We are very concerned about this problem and are working
diligently to address the situation. We are currently investigating the
source of this email to take further action. You may rest assured that
your account standing has not changed and that your listings have not
              been affected.

We advise you to be very cautious of email messages that ask you to
submit information such as your credit card number or your email
password. eBay will never ask you for sensitive personal information
such as passwords, bank account or credit card numbers, Personal
Identification Numbers (PINs), or Social Security numbers in an email
itself. If you ever need to provide information to eBay please open a
new Web browser, type www.ebay.com, and click on the "site map" link
located at the top of the page to access the eBay page you need.

If you have any doubt about whether an email message is from eBay,
please forward it immediately to spoof@ebay.com and do not respond to it
or click on any of the links in the email message. Please do not change
the subject line or forward the email as an attachment.

If you entered personal information such as your password, social
security number or credit card numbers into a Website based on a request
from a spoofed email, you need to take immediate action to protect your
identity. We have developed an eBay Help page with valuable information
regarding the steps you should take to protect yourself.

To get to the "Protecting Your Identity" Help page from the eBay site,
please click on the "help" link located at the top of most eBay pages
and select the following topics when the "eBay Help Center" window
              appears:

Safe Trading > If Something Goes Wrong > Identity Theft

We encourage you to review additional information about protecting your
identity found in the eBay Help system. Please click on the "help" link
located at the top of most eBay pages and select the following topics
when the "eBay Help Center" window appears:

Safe Trading > If Something Goes Wrong& > Account Theft > Account
              Protection

Once again, thank you for alerting us to the spoof email you received.
Your vigilance helps us ensure that eBay remains a safe and vibrant
              online marketplace.

              Regards,

Re: Spoof email from ebay- Beware

Months ago, I got several of those. You read about old geezers getting taken in confidence schemes, and you think they are just painfully "old and slow"...NOT SO, in this case. The email was an exact duplicat of ebay's logo and font.

I was lucky; I was suspicious from the beginning because there were no problems obvious in my account or on my credit card. The first ones I ignored. The next bunch that I got, I logged onto ebay's security section and read up on the ploy. The next time I got one, I forwarded to an FBI computer crime site. After that, no more spoof email from "ebay". Finally...a way to stop unwanted email that really works.

                  Lyle,
That's the one! I made the mistake of logging onto my ebay from that message.
