    Mid-year outside mirror

When adding a passenger side mirror, is a driver's side mirror normally used?

    Jack -

I'd think so, as there was no passenger-side accessory mirror in those days. If you're going to add one, sit in the driver's seat and have a helper position the added mirror until you can see it; if you go for symmetry and mount it the same distance back from the edge of the door as the driver's side mirror, the vent window rear post will block your view of the mirror face. Don't ask how I know this

      Way to go John ....

I take it you found this out AFTER you drilled the hole. Hey, it takes a man to admit his mistakes and the little woman keeps reminding me how manly I am.

        speaking of errors...

I ordered a dated replacement glass for my long base outside mirror on my 63SWC. I popped out the old one tonight, and found that the new glass kept falling out. I compared the glass size (circumference) and found it was a little smaller than the one in it(wrong date).
It was only $11 but why would Corevtte Central make the wrong size? Are the lock rings different widths?

          Steve,

If it's a 63 1st design mirrir that you have, wouldn't it require a Vacco mirror glass instead of a dated DMI glass? I thought the 2nd design mirror was the first to use DMI.

My 3rd edition NCRS 63-64 tech manual says they used the DMI on the early design mirrors, too. Is there a minute size difference in the glass you describe?

Can't remember for sure but I thought the size was the same. I have a Vacco and several DMI's somewhere in the garage and will check. (if I can find them)

Has anyone had good results re-chroming a mid-year outside mirror if it is possible and approximately how much should one expect to pay? Thanks in advance.

That was many years ago, and fortunately, the car had no paint on it at the time (had just stripped it); have always had the habit of pre-fitting all trim parts before paint so no surgery is required on fresh paint for final assembly.

                    Jack,

These are pot metal and if they have blister pits I wouldn't waste the effort. The base metal really needs to be sanded beyond the dead zinc area that is causing the blister to fully eliminate the problem. This typicaly results in finished piece with a funky contour.

If the mirror back and base are free from pitting but have weak/worn chrome, I think you could have them done for 50 to 75 bucks. You might want to separate the pieces first, so bubba at the chrome shop doesn't hose them up for you.
