I am having the engine rebuilt on my early production '59 fuelie (VIN 105) and am trying to determine if the motor has the original/correct heads. The casting number on the block is 3737739. Both heads have casting numbers of 3748770. One of the heads has X58 cast on the side of the head with the following casting numbers on the top of the head:
GM E28 (May 2, 1958?)
13
6D
The other head just has X8 cast on the side with the following casting numbers on the top of the head:
GM D288 (April 28, 1958?)
13
2D
I am particularly confused about the X8 casting on the side of the second head. What is the significance of the other casting numbers (the 13, and the 6D and 2D) under the casting dates? This information is being provided by the machinist doing the rebuild, so I am dealing with his observations and second hand data. Thanks for any and all input. Regards, - Kevin
