    stronger rear in 60 vette

I would like to put a stronger rear in my 60 vette, preferably a front loader such as the Ford 9 inch, does anybody set up this type rear so when you get it it is all set up to take the stock brakes and shocks and all the proper mounts for the sway bar and other assorted stuff that went on a stock rear, pretty much a bolt in?

not aware of any "national" outfits selling such a 9" ford that would allow you to use your original brakes/shocks/sway bar. you'd probably need to fabricate the ford to accept your vette pieces. if you're making enough horsepower to necessitate a 9" ford, you'll probably find the vette brakes inadequate. why not install a c-4 front and rear suspension, which will also require frame modifications to accept the c-4 pieces. mike

Right now I am running a 336 non posi, maybe i should just keep it in for now and once i get the new drivetrain in place, worry about it if i start braking stuff, I'm hoping to make about 350-400 hp with a 4 speed or 5 speed, what posi pumpkins will just drop in my stock rear and how easy are they to get my hands on at what cost, can i make the stock rear stronger and again at what cost. Do you think i even need to?

unless you are going to run

drag slicks the tires will limit the strain on the rear end.

You could check with someone like http://www.currieenterprises.com

They probably already have the dimensions for spring perches, etc, for a C1. They could also tell you if/what you might be able to do internally to your existing rearend to strengthen it yet have it remain stock appearing on the outside.

doubt you'll break any pieces of the c-1 rear with 350 to 400 hp sb unless, as clem pointed out, you elect to use real stickey tires. i've been putting 400 to 450 hp to the stock rear in my 57 vette for 10 plus years and haven't twisted an axle yet( the l-88 that once powered the 57 years ago would regularly grenade axles with stickey tires). as far as what posi unit will fit your stock c-1 axle housing goes , any chevy or pass car rear differential from 57 to 64 will bolt right in.you could also get any 57 to 64 vete or pas car posi case and insert into you differential housing. you'll need to educate yourself on the differneces of under 4.10 to one rear ratios vs over 4.11 ratios when ordering the ring and pinion of choice . good luck, mike

Where would i get this info, and when you say posi case do you mean the pumpkin assy(Ring and pinion and asst gears) that you bolt into the housing as a unit

Currie in Cal , i was on the phone today with them, everything except the brakes...drums and brakes would be ford, choice of disc or drum, any width. Will come complete ready to install, all brackets and purches installed...about 2400 + shipping..........For now i will stick with what i have, he had a bunch of tech reason why you cant make the stock rear much stronger.
