I have a 3822170 housing which I know is incorrect for my application. I was wondering what the correct application is. The part number is stamped across the top of the housing, not on the neck or flange. The numbers are a little hard to read but I think I got them right. Thanks.

Re: Thermostat Housing
Bill,
From your email address, I assume we are talking about a red 70.
PN 3877660 is the original coolant outlet for 70 except LT1. My Corvette parts book does not even list a 3822170, so it must be off another Chevy car or truck with small block.
You won't be able to find 3877660 at your Chevy dealer. If they have anything with this part number, it is a replacement and it won't look like your original. The best source for originals is the swap meets, but such outlets are usually in rough shape from corrosion at the gasket flange, so examine them closely to get a good one. Some of the vendors have a very good reproduction, but it is pricey; last time I checked they were around $40.

Re: Thermostat Housing
Chuck - The manifold isn't right either. It was identified by Joe L and others a while back as an aluminum unit correct for a 65-66 327 350 or 365 horse if memory serves. I was thinking that it might be the correct housing for that manifold. I plan on trying to find a correct manifold and housing and sell or trade the unit that I currently have. I wanted to identfy it to see if its worth trying to sell or trade the two pieces together. If it was never used on any Corvette it will end up in the parts pile. Its a little hard to see the numbers. I could have one or two wrong. Even so the numbers weren't close to anything I could find either. Thanks.- Top

Re: Thermostat Housing
Bill,
My experience is not with mid-years, so I can not sort out which is the "high performance" and which is the "special high performance" in 65/66.
The nearest coolant outlet PN I can find to your posted PN is for 63-65 w/SHP or FI. These manifolds originally had a coolant outlet with casting number 3827370 (part number is the same). If you mis-interpreted the "7" as a "2", and the "3" as a "1" (more of a stretch), you would have the part number you posted, i.e. 3822170, and the outlet could be original to the manifold. Otherwise, you will have to wait until Joe Lucia gets back online to eliminate the outlet as non-original.
On the 3877660 outlet, let me say I have seen at least two configurations of this outlet. If you don't get an outlet with your correct intake manifold, I recommend you attend a judging meet and look at original cars, preferably a Bowtie, and check with the Team Leader onsite to confirm what a correct coolant outlet looks like before shopping for one.

Re: Thermostat Housing
Bill-----
I can find no reference to a GM #3822170 water outlet used on any car or truck application. However, it's possible that it's a casting number only and no finished part was of the same part number. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
