I am finally ready to paint my engine and need guidance. I have seen pictures of a 63 taken with less than 1500 miles and it shows paint on the SB exhaust manifolds and Noland Adams in his book states manifolds were on when painted on page 78 and in a picture on page 161 and I believe the picture on page 134 supports this. I met a fellow who claimed to work the engine line in 67 at a show and he stated the exhaust manifolds were on when they were painted. The NCRS 1966 Technical Information Manual& Judging Guide states this for big blocks but not for small blocks. How do I resolve this since I asked a Master Judge at Orlando and he stated he believed they were on when painted but manual said not and not to get deductions he would paint the engine with exhaust manifolds off.

Re: Late 66& 67 EXHAUST MANIFOLDS on SB
Sometime in late 66 on SB the exhaust manifolds were assembled after painting the engine. This continued into the 67 & 68 model as well. So the exhaust manifolds (late 66, 67, and 68)would be RAW CASTINGS...no paint. I think this was done to eliminate the burn off and smell of the paint when new. Another interesting point is the spark plugs were assembled prior to painting and do exhibit overspray. I assume the tips were masked to allow full electrical contact with the plug wires.- Top
