C1: Diagnostic needed for my 1961

Today, when I started from a dead stop in my 4 speed '61, I heard a loud pop around the right rear wheel area. I don't hear it when shifting to 2nd, 3rd or 4th. It happended just about every time I started off in 1st gear. It is only when I start from a dead stop in 1st. I drained the rear end but no metal on the plug, but there is some fluid coming from the inner right rear wheel.

Any thoughts what it might be?

    Thanks.

Sounds like you may have a trashed wheel bearing. Do you feel any heat around the hub? Have you jacked it up and checked for play?

yeah, there's alot of heat on the wheel. Actually, both rear wheels felt super hot, but the noise was only coming from the right rear wheel...

      Haven't checked for play yet.

Wheel bearing is your best estimate?

      Thanks.

Might be brake related, as you will get a lot of heat with a problem there too. I'd ferret it out before I'd drive it much more, just for safety's sake. Good luck!

You brake shoe may be sticking or worn.

I've noticed that my brakes have been a little spoungy. Maybe that would explain why both rear wheels were super hot. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Thanks for the input. It is appreciated!

Yeah, I'd lose about 10 clicks on the rear brake shoes and go for a ride. DC

You could have a leaking a brake cylinder. The shoes can get coated and really cause havoc. Irregular braking to the point of causing real chassis upset when braking. I would pull that brake drum before going anywhere. Just my 2cents.

And it only happens in first because you are probably just starting from a dead stop after applying the brakes...
