    67 camshaft

I need to replace the "rumpety-rump" hot rod camshaft that someone installed in my all original 67 327-300 coupe some time ago (does not work well at all with auto trans). Does anyone know if the original 300 horse camshaft is still available from GM, and if not, who make a suitable replacement? As always, thanks in advance for your help. Rex #8089

    Rex------

The original camshaft used for your application was GM #3896929. It was discontinued more than 20 years ago and superceded by several "replacements". The currently available replacement is GM #14088839. This cam GM lists for about $250 and I wouldn't recommend using it, anyway.

Reproductions of the GM #3896929 are available from manufacturing sources like Federal-Mogul, Crane, and Comp Cams. Also, a Crane-manufactured kit which includes camshaft and lifters is available from GM under GM #12364051 at a very attractive price.

I installed the Crane cam Joe spoke of. Make sure when you pull your cam to check the rear journal. In 65/66 the BB rear journal was cut for lubrication. In 67 the rear journal should be uncut.

Look up the Crane web sight and you'll find the cam. It was mighty tempting to install that L88 cam but I stayed stock. BB L78/L72/L71/LS6 all the same mech/cam but check the rear journal on yours to make sure it's a 67 or newer.

This engine is a small block. While I believe that some of the real early small blocks did use a grooved rear cam journal, by the 60's this was gone.
