    Fuel pump 4460

I just removed a working "long screw" type mechanical fuel pump from a '57 Corvette. I'm certain it is a replacement because the inlet and outlet holes are too large for the stock fittings. At least they are arranged opposite each other with the outlet on the front side. The attachment flange is lightly stamped 4460. The bottom plate is cast with a small AC in the middle. The top does not have an "AC" logo cast into it.

Does anyone know the original application for such a pump? I'm guessing it's for some late fifties passenger car with a performance engine.

AC fuel pump type 4460 is applicable to 1966 and 1967 Chevrolet El Caminos with 283 or 327 cid engines. It's still available, too. From GM dealers it's known as GM #6414447 and from Delco dealers it's, of course, AC 4460.

Sounds like an assembly of mismatched parts. As Joe stated, 4460 pumps are still available and service many Chevy applications. They are NOT long screw fuel pumps and the inlet and outlet of a 4460 are arranged 90 degrees apart with outlet pointing toward the right front headlight. They have 1/4" pipe thread fittings instead of a long screw's 3/8" fittings. There are several 4460s on Ebay right now.

Same pump were used on various models having different size out lets. But using the same part number. Just another example of a part having the same number but a design change ( like the 7 and 9 fin valve covers

          Thanks for your help

I really appreciate the time everyone took to respond.

I've obviously got a combination of parts from at least two fuel pumps. I re-checked the stamping and I am certain it reads 4460 AX. However, the long screw lower portion (with large threaded openings directly opposite each other) must have been added by some past owner.

The AC 4460 is a "short screw" style pump. However, I'm sure that the top section of these screw-style pumps can be interchanged. Most likely, this pump has been through a commercial rebuilder's operation. Like so many other rebuilt parts, commercial rebuilders strip fuel pumps down to component parts. These component parts are then used to "build up" fuel pumps without regard to what ID markings may have been on the original components.

The only application that I can find for the 4460 was 66-67 El Camino with small block. This sort of intrigues me since the same pump was not used on 66-67 Chevelles with small block. I can't figure out why. From the cab forward, the El Camino was pretty much the same as Chevelle. So, why it would use a different fuel pump is a mystery.

Yes, I see that GM #6414447 is applicable to 1955 Corvette. The AC number for that one is supposed to be AC-6935, though. So, I'm not sure what the deal is here. It may be that the AC type 4460 aka GM #6414447 replaced the AC type 6935.
