C2:67 Seat Belt Retractor- Remove belt?

Looking for advice of how to get the seat belt off the retractor reel without unstitching the belt. I'm sure it was already stitched when it was put on the reel.

The white plastic cap (see picture)on the side of the frame is the spring housing, which says on it "Caution-Do Not Remove". It looks to me, that this needs to be removed in order to pull the shaft pin for the reel. However with the note, and not knowing how the spring is attached to the shaft, I'm afraid I'll get the spring unwound all over the room.

My object is to take the belt off the reel to refinish the frame, and then put it back together. If anyone has done this, please advise.

Jerry, I inadvertantly took one of these apart while helping my buddy fix the retractors on his 73. I would do it again but wear gloves and even eye protection. The spring steel in the housing really wants to come out. Once we had it apart and figured out how it went back together it wasn't that hard. I would have a helper, for the use of a second set of eyes, watching over your shoulder as you disassemble this, going very S L O W L Y, so as to see the sequence. Once apart, clean, prime, paint and reassemble as required.
