    C1 Temp Gauge

Just returned from cruising in my '56 and noticed that the temp gauge is bouncing all over the place. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Re: C1 Temp Gauge

    (1) Flakey ground at gauge in the dash.

    (2) Wire to temp sender is cut/nicked and sproadically making contact to ground.

    (3) Conductive contaminats coating the Bakelite insulator of the temp sender's contact pin.

    (4) Too many years have gone by on this 1-year only version of the pin-head sender and she's sporadically shorting out inside.

A quick check (not conclusive) on #4 is to pull the temp sender and shake it listening closely for coolant 'sloshing' inside. If so, there's a remote chance you can save it (the '56 version of the temp sender IF it's an original AC is RARE!!!).

Approach would be to put it in the oven for a day or so on 'keep warm' setting to force evaporation of the coolant that's penetrated the lower unit. Now, once everything is dried out, mix a good quality epoxy (like JB Weld) and 'spoon' it on the bottom side, in the crevice between the inner portion of the hex thread and the lower cylinder to force a seal.
