    C1 Generator Tag Rivet Removel

The generator on my '62 has no tag and the rivets are broken off in the generator (broken off flush with the outer surface). I just had the generator rebuilt and the shop unsuccessfully tried to remove the remaining parts of the rivets with a punch and a hammer. From reading the archives I learned that these are blind holes.

Any tips on how to remove the ends of the rivets now that they have been pounded into the hole?

    Thanks,
    Mike

That's what happened to mine too. I just drilled them out. The rivet is softer than the case. So using a small drill bit in there pretty much cleaned out the old hole.

Do be careful. Use a drill stop on the bit. You'll ruin the generator if the drill goes through the case. I didn't trust the new rivets to hold my expensive tag on. I secured the tag to the case with epoxy. The new rivets are now the "suspenders" in this belt and suspender attachment.

Remember that the tag goes on "upside down."

          Prior to rebuild, I

Used a very sharp wood chisel pushed under the tag an gently pried up to remove. Flawless results, I was even able to re-use the original rivets.
