Master Cylinder Sleeve, Brass or Stainless

I will be buying a rebuilt Master Cylinder for a 1957 shortly. What would be the best way to go, Brass or Stainless sleeve? Is there a rebuild shop that stands out from the rest? How are the Cylinders that are rebuilt by Whitepost? Also, is there anything else I should be watching for? Many Thanks for the information.

    Regards,

    Bob Adams

I think that you would be satisfied with either brass or stainless done by a competent rebuilder. Personally I have never had any work done by White Post, but by the reputation they have, I would not hesitate to send them my master cylinder. They were one of the early on rebuilders. They have done vintage "juice" brake cylinders for many years

Whitepost. Great work and the fastest turn around time in the hobby. I believe they use brass.

Bob - Brian is right, Whitepost is excellent. I also had a super job done quickly by Apple Hydraulics and I was assembling the cylinder myself with kit, and they will just do the brass sleeving work without the complete reassembly. Saves about $80 or so....your choice, they both do well.....Craig

Lonestar Caliper in Texas can also sleeve your master cylinder. They are also the largest supplier of rebuilt/sleeved calipers.

I have checked with Mary Jo Rohner and Grossmueller's Classic Corvettes, they both are asking $400.00 for a correct Master Cylinder for a 1957. Both of those are without the cap. One has a Stainless Sleeve the other has Brass. Both cylinders are bare metal on the exterior. Is that the correct finish? Also, is that about as good as I can do on price?

Re: Master Cylinder Sleeve, Brass or Stainless

Bob - while I can't comment on the price aspect, I would personally opt for the brass over stainless since the brass is a better bearing surface, and the aluminum piston strokes much more in the master cylinder than pistons do in calipers. I think the stainless would potentially cause more abrasion on the aluminum piston and wear than the brass sleeve would. This is just my personal feeling, and what I would do......Craig

                Re: Correct Master Cylinder Needed!

Thanks to all of you, I discovered the Master Cylinder on this car is not correct. I have tried Mary Jo Rohner and Grossmueller's Classic Corvettes for a brass sleeved Cylinder, to no avail. Any suggestions where I might find one.

                Many Thanks!

Bob, it's unlikely that you'll find an already-sleeved rebuilt 022 master cylinder in stock anywhere; you'll probably have to look for a used 022 core, then send it out to be sleeved and put a kit in it.
