    Grabby Clutch

The longer I drive my 64 (C2... 327/300hp, 4 speed) around... it seems the clutch gets worse. It begins fine, allows smooth shifts and easy release... but as the engine gets hot... it becomes "grabby" and it is very difficult for a slow easy start.

Is it time for a new clutch or is it getting something on it that creates this or ?
    Thanks for any help...

    Robert:

There are many different types of racing clutches which are almost impossible to drive smoothly on the street. Are you sure that you have a street type clutch disc installed? If your disc is not a Marcal type (there is a buffer spring layer between the friction material and the backing), and/or solid, then you will experience very harsh engagement. The Marcal springs absorb axial loads, and the disc springs, which separate the splined hub from the contact area, absorb torsional loads.
Aside from the mechanics outlined above, there are many friction materials whose coefficient changes dramatically upon heating. Among these are ceramic and semi-metallic.
If your clutch is simply "chattering" (vibrating during engagement), then you likely have oil contamination, or a warped pressure plate and/or flywheel. I am sorry, but I think that a teardown and inspection are in order if your condition is severe.
