I started up my '66 big block after installing a new cam, lifters, pushrods and rocker arms. Before starting it I set the timing mark ar "0" and installed the distributor as per the manual. I've broken in the cam and the engine runs well, has a good idle and acceleration and operates at a normal temperature. Anything wrong with just leaving everything as is, rather than acrually setting the timing with a light, adjusting idle mixtures, etc. I'm inclined to use the "leave well enough alone" theory at this point.
