Re: headlamp flange bearings
Kelly, there is an article in an past issue of The Corvette Restorer on this topic, but an article search here did not bring it up. I don't have the article handy without a lot of research, but you can probably get by without it.
If you examine the door bearings, you will see the process is pretty straight forward. As I recall, the bore through the housing is open on both ends, so you can probably press the bearing straight through from either side that makes sense.
Just be very careful when pressing on the original aluminum housings...it won't take much to render those aluminum housings useless. Support the housing such that the load is not being taken on the little mounting ears, and press ONLY on the bearing (use a socket that is just smaller than the bearing race OD). One option might be to make a support by boring a hole in a piece of scrap 2 X 4 just bigger than the bearing OD.
Here's a hint: It will be easier to paint your housing semi-flat black before you press in the new bearings. The scrap wood support shouldn't mar the paint if it's done right.- Top
