    69 alternator

the guage -ammeter shows a positive charge when i start the car but sits just shy of 0 in the - a minute afterwards , is this typical ? i am not having battery problems at startup or running with lights for extended periods . can you walk me through the procedure for checking alt for volts with hand held volt meter? it seems to me like a similar diode failure and showing me low charge condition.??

    Re: 69 alternator

Kelly having driven my original owner 70 all these years, after initial start up the positive charge will reduce and driving enough to recharge a good battery with the air off, radio off, daytime driving no lights on, windshield wipers off, and the alternator just supplying the ignition system, my guage will right on the center mark or just smidgen on the right side of the mark. After driving your car and checking the voltage of a good battery you will probably see 13 volts on the digital volt meter if you leave the doors closed so as not to illuminate the interior lighting.
