My 1960 was laid up for about 3-4 weeks while a had the machine shop redo my heads after three new valve springs failed after just 500 miles. I got the heads and all back on and fired up the car and adjusted the valves. took the car out for a ride and first things I noticed were that the auto choke didn't, and a periodic plum of black smoke out the tail pipe. After investigating I found that the piston in the choke housing was stuck. The spring would not open or close the butterfly by hand. I took the choke unit off the carb and dissasembled it on my bench where I found the piston and link were stuck. I sprayed liquid wrench all inside the choke housing and worked the piston until it seems to work better and reinstalled it on the car. What would cause this piston to stick in its bore? Should I have removed the welch plug and honed the bore? If so where would I get a new welch plug?
