    Valve spring tester

A 300 psi capacity tester is sufficient for testing small block springs. Is it also sufficient for testing big block springs?

Steve - it is marginal, my RIMAC is 500lb, and they make a 1000lb. Roller springs will take more, but a flat tappet mild cam spring set may squeak by.......Craig

you only need to check the pressure at installed height. if you equipt the tester with a dial indicator you can check the # per " rate of the spring which is what is important in selecting a spring.

        PS

when checking used springs aways test at 200 degrees, what the oil temp would be under operating conditions for the springs, because that is where the problems can show up. i remember testing used springs at room temp because the engine would not RPM like before and finding the springs were within 5% of new at installed height but we installed new springs and the RPM came back. heat is a big factor in springs

How do you heat the spings and measure the temperature? Put them in boiling water for a few minutes?

i put them in a small electric oven but any way should work. this is more work than it is worth for stock springs but race engine springs are a different matter because of the cost.
