    Carlisle

Driving the 61 from the Providence, RI area and planning a route of 95 south to 267 in CT to Tappan Zee then 87 to 78 and 81 but I'm also thinking 84 in Hartford through Scranton and 81 to Carlisle, seems more scenic and relaxing (less commuter traffic) time frame is thursday a.m. from 5 - noon. Any thoughts on road and traffic conditions???
    Thanks!!!

Jim, the TZ bridge is kinda the best place to cross the Hudson River. Please remember that 287 goes through the heart of Whire Plains, NY. This is a rather busy area with many commercial headquarter buildings. Meaning the rather speedy drivers from NY, NJ and Conn. have a high speed road rally at rush hour. I live in NH and my route will be after the TZ, 87 North to the NJ exit for Rt. 17 and 287. Then 287 South in NJ to Route 78 towards PA.

be advised that there is a lot of construction from past Hew Haven to about the New York border-couple this with the normal commuter trafic and you have a 25 mile stop and go situation. I live down here and avoid this section of 95 as much as possible.Try the Merrit Parkway or go over the Newburgh Bridge then down to 78.

I live in northern NJ close to 287 (near Morristown) and 287's a major commuter thorofare, particularly south in the afternoon. I can't vouch for the Hartford area, but the Scranton route sounds good to me.

            Jim,
I've tried several ways from New England to Carlisle and the Tappan Zee/287/78 route seems the best. From Providence you should find Route 95 south to be faster than heading to The Mass Turnpike/Route 84. Hane a safe trip.

I cross over rt. 287 as it winds it's way to the T-Z bridge and I can tell you that with all of the MAJOR construciton in the area traffic can back up about 5 miles leading up to the bridge and is cause for a real night mare from 4:00pm-the end of the rush hour. I would come across 684 to the NYS thruway, Less traffic more pleasant drive and better scenery!

If it was my 61 and I do have a 61, I'd take 90 west to 87, 87 to 287 and 78w. Since you are considering 84 through Hartford, 90 will work. I run up to Maine a lot and have tried several routes. 84 can be a parking lot from Hartford to Danbury. Sometimes it is a clean run at off peak hours. It keeps switching direction.... and changing lanes is a crap shoot due to the high rate of speed, no blinkers and no concept of how to "yield" on a merge. With the rag top up and one drivers side mirror, this is an adrenalin run. From Central Jersey to Hartford the time is close enough whether using 287 to 87 to 90 vs 287, 87 to 84. Triple A suggests 287 to 684 to 84 going north. You can be real efficient and take 95 to the PA turnpike and get off right in Carlisle.
From 81 you can get off a few exits before Carlisle and enjoy some great smooth, curvy and dippy roads....Mechanicsville exit, bear right, left at first light about a mile down the road...believe this is rt914, check out a map.
                  Good luck....

                    Jim,

I live in south central CT and I travel to mid-PA quite often. At the times that you plan to be travelling (5 am to noon) I propose that the best route is through Hartford to 84W through NY, into PA. 84 to 81S to Carlisle. At 5 am departure, you will miss the morning traffic in Hartford. But as you continue to drive toward NY, traffic will increase and be heavy in NJ along 287. 84 will be smooth sailing and you will really enjoy the scenery.

Take care...See you in Carlisle. I plan to be there on Saturday.

                          Re: Alert....

There is all kinds of road work currently going on involving 81 and 80 between Scranton and Carlisle. You may need to expect delays if crossing a small part of these interstates. This is where I reside folks! I myself, will shift my plans to travel 11/15, where there is little traffic and good roads. The down side is more traffic lights.
                          Best regards, Jon
