Repro Tire DOES NOT fit in the Spare Tire Tub

    Hello,

Just tried to put my original knock-off wheel and reproduction 6.70-15 BFG spare tire in the tire tub. IT WON'T FIT!!! The tire diameter is too large for the tub, I even tried putting it in the tub at 20 psi and it would go in part way but the carrier would not even begin to close. I have the correct length tire carrier hanger bolts for k. o. wheels, but the section width of the tire seems too wide also. I compared the reproduction tire to the 205-75-15 radial that is going on the car and the repro bias tire seems to be almost 1 inch taller???

Has anyone had this problem? If so, what did you do to solve it?

I can't remember having any problem with an worn original bias ply tire that I used to use.

    Best Regards,

    James,
There really is no solution for this problem. While it is true that the original molds are used to make these tires, DOT regulations require inflation of the tire while it is still hot which causes the tire to grow. This was not done on the originals.

      Joe,

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to try to find another used blackwall bias tire for a spare or go with a 205-75-15 radial as a spare. I just tried putting the new radial tire in the tub and it fit and the carrier closed with room to spare. The new radial was not mounted on a k.o. wheel.

My recolection says the 205 won't fit either. Maybe it will if not on the wider KO wheel. I had to go to a 195.

          James -
I just installed a new spare tire tub and fit a P205/75/R15 on a 6" repro rim with full tire pressure in the tub. OD was fine but it was a little tight width wise. I used the front and rear carrier bolts recommended for the goldline tires. I got the rear bolt to tighten up all the way but the carrier still has a gap on the rearward edge. I am assuming is normal with Goldline tires since the rear bolt won't allow you to close the tub any further.....P.J.

The upper tub on my '67 is also a reproduction, and 205/75-15 radials on 6" bolt-ons fit with no problem at all, with the "long" front hanger bolts and the stock rear lock bolt; the repro tub is slightly larger in diameter than the original tub, and that makes all the difference.

Re: Repro Tire DOES NOT fit in the Spare on C1's

Same thing on C1's , some good original 670x15 tires can be gotton on E-bay to be used as a spare, so that the board will fit flat in the trunk.
