Never seen IN --> OUT Casting #

Mike -- A. Colvin, Noland's Vol 2, and all "962" blocks I've ever seen have the casting # reading from outboard (driver side) towards centerline of block. I have about a dozen e-pics of 962 casts confirming this orientation. Also, the '65 TM & JG (although mentioning the "961" as a no-no) states that (all) blocks have left-to-right casting # "when standing at the rear of the engine and facing forward".

My 942 66 block and many blocks I have observed for sale also read from left to right as viewed from the bellhousing, and they have been stripped to the bare cast iron and there was no JB weld or welding. I have never seen one reading from the crank centerline outward towards the oil filter boss...Craig

        Thanks everyone for the discusion.

I understand what I am buying better now, and will pay the price of a 427 car without the original motor.

casting # lost in hot tank indicates a creative casting # designer schooled in the fine art of JB Weld. mike

wayne and craig: i screwqed up on the post regarding orientation of casting #'s. i had the story ass-backwards. real 962 and 942 and 351 cast #'s read outboard to inboard whereas the bogus 961 converted to 962 with epoxy read inboard to outboard. should have went and looked at one of my bb before shooting from the hip. sorry for confusion. mike
